Deerhunter (Popfrenzy Presents) News

We bring back out Deerhunter, Les Savy Fav and Blonde Redhead for Laneway Festival 2011!!!

As we mentioned last week in early 2011, Popfrenzy brings three of the world’s most exciting live indie acts back to Australian stages to play Laneway Festival. Blonde Redhead, Les Savy Fav and Deerhunter weigh-in to an already stacked Laneway line-up. Add them to your festival timetable, as Laneways hits Brisbane (Feb 4), Melbourne (Feb 5), Sydney (Feb 6), Adelaide (Feb 11) and Perth (Feb 12). Tickets on sale this Wednesday October 20th!

We can't wait! Les Savy Fav are back after their much loved visits in 2004 and 2006. Those that came along to those shows will no doubt have fond and sweaty memories. 2011 will be no different. Deerhunter return after their triumphant debut tour last year which are still talked about and remain some of the best live music memories of 2009. Finally, the one and only Blonde Redhead make their second visit after selling out their 2007 shows in Sydney and Melbourne. This time they're back with an additional member and on the back of their outstanding new album Penny Sparkle.

Blonde Redhead return to Australia with your first chance to hear their new twisted, noisy take on dream pop. It’s the bands first live performance in Australia since dropping their latest album, Penny Sparkle. The band admits to never having made a record this way before, “I fell in love with the music like falling for someone you've known for a long time. It was dreamy and sometimes was very stormy. At times, I felt like a shepherd who was trying to herd five stallions into a yard (unsuccessfully).” And with the chance to do it all over again, they’d do it exactly the same way. Formed in 1993, Blonde Redhead is one of the stayers and shakers of independent music and is often compared to early Sonic Youth. Fittingly, the original four-piece line-up was discovered by Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, who released the first two Blonde Redhead albums.

Brooklyn’s art-punks, Les Savy Fav (co-presented with Civil Society) are another pillar of independent music. They’ve been on the circuit for well over a decade and have over the years recorded with other indie rock institutions like Fiery Furnaces, Broken Social Scene, Enon and Modest Mouse. Their latest release, Root for Ruin sees the band leave their swinger ways behind, opting to return to the sanctuary of tight musical marriage between frontman Tim Harrington, bassist Syd Butler, drummer Harrison Haynes, and guitarists Seth Jabour and Andrew Reuland. Les Savy Fav head to Australia for the third time, packing a set full of new, “Pixies-like crowd-pleasers [Guardian]”. Having been an integral part of Popfrenzy since their first visit in 2004, the band promises to deliver something very special for all their Australian fans this summer. Get ready!!

Deerhunter rounds out Popfrenzy’s touring party hitting Australia over the Laneway period. The quartet of Bradford Cox, Lockett Pundt, Joshua Fauver and Moses Archuleta have established themselves as one of the most innovative and important bands to emerge from the US in recent years. Halycon Digest, their latest full-length release, was recorded in their home state (Georgia) and is already being widely hailed—by critics and fans alike—as their best yet. Matthew Perpetua of Fluxblog praises the musicianship of drummer Archuleta, guiding the epic listeners through the epic first single, ‘He Would Have Laughed’. “This is their most sophisticated and graceful piece of music”, he says. This (the last) track on the album was recorded in Marietta and is dedicated to musician Jay Reatard who sadly passed away earlier this year; the band collaborated with the Memphis musician in 2008 to release a split 7” where they covered each otherʼs songs.

Laneway Festival has become synonymous with hot summer days, awesome locations and diverse, forward-thinking line-ups filled to overflowing with vital, surprising bands. Favouring talent over mainstream success, Laneway has consistently brought compelling, boundary-pushing acts to discerning punters and next year's event will continue that tradition.
