Songs are Max Doyle, Ela Stiles, Cameron Emerson-Elliot and Ben James

Since the release of their enchanting self-titled debut album in 2009, Songs have been catapulted to the forefront of Australia’s authentic guitar-pop resurgence. Having played alongside fellow Aussie rock enthusiasts such as Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Twerps and My Disco, the Sydneysiders are living, walking proof that good modern jangle pop exists beyond the burgeoning cultural capital that is Melbourne.

Capturing the infectious simplicity of The Clean, spliced with the minimalism of John Cale and the quintessential Aussie jangle of the Triffids, Songs produced one of the finest albums of 2009.

Enjoying heavy Triple J rotation, they recently caught the attention of Go-Betweens innovator and legend Robert Forster, stating “it was the sort of album that was totally outside the box. If this record came out overseas, it would be the sort of album that would be recognized and celebrated.”

On an international level, over the past few years, the band have supported the likes of Deerhunter, Beach House, Yo La Tengo and Stephen Malkmus, culminating in an appearance at the Popfrenzy showcase in 2010 at SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

Now armed with a stellar new lineup featuring Ben James from Talons on drums and Cameron Emerson-Elliot from Youth Group on guitar, the screws have been tightened and the wheels are in motion.

The follow-up to their 2009 unanimously adored debut effort titled ‘Malabar’ was recorded in Sydney in early 2012. Whilst still showcasing the bands unique pop sensibilities, the album conveys a rounder, more wholesome sound than the debut.

Excited about the impending release of their new album, Songs front man Max Doyle had these words to say: “We were actually less prepared going into the studio this time so there were more surprises, mostly nice ones.“

“Playing with Ben and Cam just gets better and more exciting every time. We’ve learnt so much more about each other musically. We’re much less restricted and can improvise a lot more now, so we’re a lot less locked down.”

Keep an eye out for Songs’ superb sophomore album ‘Malabar’, out early 2013 on Popfrenzy.
